Aereo Inc., a New York City-based start-up technology company, has announced that it will layoff most of its workforce and will shut down its Boston office, the Los Angeles Times reports.
This comes just months after the United States Supreme Court ruled that the company's services were in violation to the Copyright Act.
"As a company, we have always worked hard to follow the law. Should the FCC move on this issue, it would be a meaningful and important step forward for competition in the video marketplace," Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia wrote in a letter posted on the company's website.
"Thank you for your continued support of Aereo. We look forward to keeping you updated as our future unfolds."
The start-up informed government officials on Thursday that 43 employees would be laid off by next week and that a number of its New York City-based employees would also be let go, the Los Angeles Times also reports.
The Supreme Court ruled that their practice of using remote antennas to charge customers $8 to $12 monthly for local television programming was in violation of the statute.
Aereo was founded in 2012.
