Disney has come under fire for its unsuccessful release of the "John Carter" film, which has led the studio to lose approximately $200 million on the film alone.
The 2012 fantasy adventure film was based on "A Princess of Mars," a book written by Edgar Rise Burroughs as part of the Barsoom series. It followed the protagonist, John Carert, as he embarks on a mission to return home.
Although the Disney franchise was hit hard by the film's unsuccessful premier, Entertainment Weekly has offered alternative routes the series could embrace in order to prolong its existence and improve on it.
"Carter by way of Taylor Kitsch is a video game protagonist just begging for his own game, and the sprawling surface of Mars could be transformed into the setting for an action-adventure in the vein of Uncharted. Carter isn't too far off from that franchise's protagonist, Nathan Drake. Just trade in Drake's guns and jungle for a sword and the alien surface of Mars and any video game publisher could have their next big cinematic franchise," the website writes, suggesting a video game series as one alternative.
"Free from the shackles of a beloved visual reference point, the animators could take great liberties with their designs of the franchise's Martians while still remaining true to the written source material. An animated series would allow for an elastic tone that could be as lighthearted or serious as each adventure demands, and really the only thing holding such a show back would be the imagination of its creators," the website also writes, this time suggesting an animated television series.
It is rumored that the "John Carter" film cost the Disney franchise over $300 million to produce.
According to Forbes, Britain's tax authority paid the company $42.9 million to alleviate costs of film production.
Disney has not made a statement surrounding their future plans with other stories in the series.
