American actress Elizabeth Pena is reported dead at 55, after succumbing to a brief illness of undisclosed nature. Hollywood mourns her death, including friend and "La Bamba" co-star Lou Diamond Phillips.
Elizabeth Pena's first film described as a "moving and melancholy comedy about a family of lower-middle-class Cuban refugees attempting to adjust to life in Spanish Harem" was titled "El Super" released in 1979. She proceeded to work in numerous television series and movies. Her most notable films and television series include "La Bamba" (1987), "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" (1986), "Jacob's Ladder" (1990), "Lone Star" (1996), the cult-followed "Batteries Not Included" (1987), "Vibes" (1988) alongside Cyndi Lauper, and "Rush Hour" (1998) with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker.
She also provided the voice for the animated film "The Incredibles" as Mirage in 2004.
Her most recent work includes a recurring role as Maritza Sandoval, in the US television series "Matador". She also appeared in the sitcom "Modern Family" as Pilar.
With news of Elizabeth Pena dead only a few days after her birthday (October 14), friends in Hollywood took to social media to share their despair as well as condolences for the family of Elizabeth Pena.
Lou Diamond Phillips, star of the 1987 biopic on Chicano rock 'n' roll star Ritchie Valens titled "La Bamba" takes to Twitter and shares, "I am stunned and heartbroken, just found out about the passing of my friend, Elizabeth Pena. She was such a Life Force it's hard to believe. Elizabeth was not only an amazing actress, she was one of the most vibrant, wonderful people I have ever known. My prayers to her family."
El Rey Network, house of "Matador" series released this statement: "She was a role model, a truly extraordinary performer and an inspiration in every sense of the word. Our thoughts are with Elizabeth's family and friends during this difficult time. She will be deeply missed."
Eva Longoria tweeted her respects saying, "Rest in Peace Elizabeth Pena... you paved the way for so many of us!!"
Debra Messing also shared her thoughts, "A ferociously funny, fierce and singular actress. A beautiful woman has gone way too soon... I miss you already. - RIP"
