Home Box Office more commonly known as HBO announced Wednesday that it will be releasing a stand-alone online service. This streaming service news has prompted reactions from other networks, as this move will revolutionize (and probably drastically affect cable service worldwide).
Currently, HBO houses numerous, world-renowned television series and feature films, as well as exclusive sports-related pay-per-view shows. To date, the network is responsible for bringing a wide range of TV series both in the drama and comedy genre. Among the many series are "True Blood", " Big Love", "Sex and the City", "Six Feet Under", "Board Walk Empire", "Silicon Valley", and the highly anticipated George R. R. Martin fantasy, "Game of Thrones."
Recently, HBO streaming service news surfaced online, following the official announcement of the network. Richard Plepler, CEO of HBO explains that although there are of course subscribers to the network, there still remains almost a hundred million homes that do not have access to HBO and its shows.
He says more on the HBO streaming service news during the Time Warner Investor Day in New York, "we will use all measures to go after them. There is a huge opportunity in front of us... we will use all means at our disposal to go after it. This is the most exciting inflection point domestically and internationally in the history of HBO."
Plepler continues on the HBO streaming service news, "That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO."
"So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States. We will work with our current partners. And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them."
