The accomplishment of the first two "Half Life" games made fans to call for a third instalment. During the E3 2014, "Half Life 3" release date rumors even surfaced before, that Valve will finally announce the official launch date of the third instalment. But that didn't happen, leaving fans dismayed once again.
According to rumors, somehow "Steam" is a possible culprit.
Valve Founder Gabe Newell gave few updates on the new release. In his interview with the Washington Post, Newell shared:
"When we started out we were a single-player video game company that could have been really successful just doing Half-Life sequel after Half-Life sequel, but we collectively said let's try to make multiplayer games even though there's never been a commercial successful multiplayer game."
"Then we tried to do Steam. There were a bunch of people internally who thought Steam was a really bad idea, but what they didn't think was that they would tell the people who were working on Steam what to do with their time. They were like "that's what you want to do with your time, that's fine, but we're going to spend our time working on Half-Life 2. We think you're kind of wasting your time, but it's your time to waste," he added.
"So, if somebody becomes the group manager of X, they're going to really resist it when X is not what you want to do in the next round of games. You don't want them to sort of burrow into that - you want them to recognize that being really good at Half-Life level design is not as nearly as valued as thinking of how to design social multi-player experiences. You've had them feel like they have an organization and title tied up to something when the key is to just continue to follow where the customers are leading."
A leaked image of the Source 2.0 engine of Left 4 Dead 2 is posted on a forum on NeoGAF on January 27 by a user familiar for leaking confidential materials to the public. This directs that Valve is succeeding with the Source 2 engine.
On May 23, it is reported that Counter-Strike co-creator and former Valve employee, Minh Le, said that he had seen artwork of the next Half-Life game, as well as Left 4 Dead 3, and confirmed that the next Half-Life game is being in progress. Le did not know when the games would come out but he stated, "I think it's kind of public knowledge that people know that it is being worked on. And so if I were to say that yeah, I've seen some images - like some concept art of it - that wouldn't be big news to be honest. Minh Le left Valve years ago and as such the concept art he saw may have been outdated."
Half-Life 3 is a long-rumored continuation of the Half-Life series likely under development by Valve. The huge success of Half-Life and Half-Life 2 combined with the cliffhanger ending of Valve's Half-Life 2: Episode 2 makes the final appearance of Half-Life 3 seem like an inevitable conclusion.
