What's next after Nexus 7? Will it be Nexus 8? Nexus 9? Or a tablet called ''Volantis"?
A lot of rumors are spreading carrying different names but according to reports, Nexus 8, Nexus 9 and "Volantis" are referring to a single tablet.
A leak comes via Android Police-- an HTC-built tablet, thought to be the Nexus 8, leaked online over the weekend. Called the "HTC Volantis", the tablet is a high-end offering that features an 8.9in 2048 x 1440 display, 2GB of RAM and NVIDIA's laptop-grade Tegra K1 processor.
Rumors in particular says the company has a Nexus 8 or Nexus 9 in the works from HTC. Now it seems there's a bit more evidence of the project, allegedly codenamed variously as Volantis and Flounder.
About the tablet specs, no one can confirm yet, but, some leaked online:
- 8.9" Display at 2048x1440 (281ppi)
- NVIDIA Logan 64-bit processor (Tegra K1)
- 2GB RAM
- 16/32GB internal storage
- 8MP OIS main camera, 3MP front facing camera
- Aluminum zero-gap construction
- Stereo 'front-facing speakers'
- 8.91"x5.98"x0.31" body (that's 22.63x15.19x0.79cm)
- 418g (or 427g with LTE) (that's 14.74/15.1 ounces)
It also lists connectivity with Bluetooth, NFC, and Wi-Fi, as well as 16GB and 32GB storage models.
Google producing an 8 inch tablet would mean the Nexus 8 will closely rival devices such as the iPad mini, LG G Pad 8.3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. Wall Street Journal article states that the device, possibly the Nexus 8, will "be equipped with two back cameras, infrared depth sensors and advanced software that can capture precise three-dimensional images of objects." While, Android Pit reports that the Nexus 8 will feature a 64-bit processor following Apple's lead with the iPhone 5s. It's rumored that Google will ditch Qualcomm and its reliable Snapdragon chips for Intel's Moorefield which is clocked at 2.33GHz and features a PowerVR G6430 GPU.
To summarized speculations, the next Nexus tablet will be built by HTC, with it's signature Boom Sound speakers in front, alongside Android L (Android Lollipop) and will carry Nvidia's Tegra K1 processor to be launch by Google.
While TK Tech News speculates that the Nexus 8 may cost $399 in the US and so, £399 in the UK.
According to a report on Android Authority, Nexus 8 has now been put forward on October 15/16 where it will apparently be launched alongside Android L, that is at the moment is the best guess.
