Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is seeking help following a series of drug and alcohol-related incidents. Professional athlete Phelps, at 29, tweeted about entering rehab and shared he announcement with all his followers.
According to Phelp's tweet, "The past few days have been extremely difficult," The athlete added, "I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself. I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself. Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future."
This tweet was following his DUI arrest last September 30. Phelps was arrested in Baltimore, Maryland and this was his second DUI after pleading guilty to drunk driving last November 2004. On his first DUI, Phelps was only 19. On an interview in Today's Show, Phelps said that it was an "isolated incident" and that he had "definitely let myself down and my family down ... I think I let a lot of people in the country down."
Michael Phelps is an American Swimmer who was decorated with 22 medals - the Olympian with most medals of all time.
Michael Phelps also told Us Weekly, "Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding, and crossing double lane lines. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down."
In February 2009, the athlete was also criticized for a photo of himself with a bong which resulted to the loss of Kellogg as a sponsor and a three month suspension from USA Swimming. Phelps admitted the mistake and publicly apologized.
