"Gone Girl" movie actor Ben Affleck believes husbands and wives wear a "mask" in their marriages that eventually "comes off".
The "Argo" actor, who is happily married to Jennifer Garner, related his latest movie to his real-life scenario.
He told British magazine "Grazia", reported by Cover Media: "Ultimately, the book is about marriage, so the movie is about marriage, although it's David's [Fincher, director] take on it."
But there will always be a time in the relationship that both husband and wife need to show who they really are.
"The way that in relationships, we kind of wear a mask initially, to make the other person attracted to us. And then there comes a time when the masks come off, you close the door and you sort of find out who you really are and who they really are," the "Gone Girl" movie actor explained.
In the movie, Nick Dunne's (Ben Affleck) wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) has disappeared, making him the center of an extreme media circus after which he becomes the spotlight due to suspicion that he may have a hand on Amy's vanishing.
The "Batman V Superman" star shared how it was difficult for him to play the role since it has to be balanced with the perception of the audience.
"I knew it was going to be a deceptively hard part to play because of the way the audience's perspective on the character had to be delicately calibrated. The idea being that you can change what you think about this guy as they story goes along," he told the magazine.
The 42-year-old actor also shared with MTV.com that he has "full frontal" in the "Gone Girl" movie.
"It's ironic, because David [Fincher] said to me from the beginning, this is a warts and all movie. It can have no vanity. You have to see the naked underbelly of this character," Affleck said.
"There's some brief, ah, very brief nudity, I think," he quipped.
