Swimmer Olympian Michael Phelps was arrested in Maryland last Tuesday. Maryland authorities announced that Phelps is facing a DUI charge.
Initial police report said that Phelps was driving a Land Rover at around 1:40 A.M. when he was arrested. The report further stated that aside from DUI - driving while under the influence - he was also driving at a speed of over 84 mph in a zone that is limited to 45 mph.
The police officer who arrested him said he was using a speed radar when he spotted a white late model Land Rover traveling above the mandated speed limit. The officer chased the vehicle through a tunnel and was able to stop the vehicle before reaching the toll booth.
When he approached the vehicle, driver handed his license and was immediately identified as Michael Phelps. On first impression, the officer observed that he appeared to be under the influence. The Olympic swimmer was unable to pass any of the sobriety tests he was told to do. The Officer noted though that Phelps have cooperated during the sobriety tests.
Phelps has already been released from police custody and has since issued several tweets about his arrest. In his tweet, he said, "I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down."
This is not Phelp's first brush against the law or his first DUI charge. He was arrested and charged DUI last 2004. He received a sentence of 18 months probation after pleading guilty of the DUI charge. Phelps issued a public apology for the DUI incident.
In 2009, Phelps was pictured at a party smoking Marijuana with the use of a bong. Phelps also issued an apology about the incident and admitted that he made a mistake. It also made him recognize who are his true and false friends were.
The bong incident caused him three months suspension from competitive swimming and one of his sponsors pulled out.
