Debra Messing comes back to TV with NBC's new series, 'Mysteries Of Laura!'
The dramedy premiered to strong ratings despite getting some subpar reviews from critics and reviewers.
According to Deadline, the show earned a 2.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic, following the 'America's Got Talent' finale. It reportedly attracted 10.4 million viewers for the first episode, allegedly getting the highest rating for any ABC, CBS or NBC show in that time slot.
However, despite the 'Will And Grace' alum's amazing talent as an actress, 'The Mysteries Of Laura' still received some bad review for its first episode.
According to Zap2It, NBC relies on the show's humor and authenticity to keep the ratings afloat. Will that be enough to keep viewers' attention?
Vulture's review pointed out how the show "[fails] in its execution" and insisted that it isn't "grounded enough to be a serious show."
The Wall Street Journal, on the other hand, thinks Messing looks amazingly fit. The rest of the show, however, falls short in expectation and is "a bit less amazing."
Entertainment Weekly, on the other hand, thinks the second episode made the show more watchable. According to its recap of the first two episodes, the second "was more enjoyable than the first."
This was because 'Mysteries Of Laura' episode two featured Laura in her detective mode. There was more police work and the audience was able to see Laura as a serious detective who sympathizes with victims. According to EW, the characters were fun and the mysteries were "fresh."
'Mysteries of Laura' stars Messing as New York homicide detective Laura Diamond, who has to deal with domestic problems while trying to work as a cop. She has two kids who cause all kinds of trouble and a husband who refuses to sign the divorce papers.
"I went on a drive-along and got to be ready to get the bad guys," Messing told Zap2It about her role as a detective. "We had gun training. Being able to look like someone who was very comfortable with a gun in my hand was important. Capt. Jack is our resident expert and he makes sure everything is the way it would be in the real world."
Hopefully, the next episode will be worthier of Messing's acting chops.
