Netflix booked comedy actor Adam Sandler for four upcoming movies as company's plan to build empire and move into movie productions that will bypass theater releases.
Sandler's "Happy Madison Productions" will work with Netflix in developing new movies that will exclusively premiered in nearly 50 countries where the streaming company operates.
"When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said yes for one reason and one reason only....Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks," Sandler said in a statement. "Let the streaming begin!!!!"
The announcement of the deal broke just two days after the announcement of the plans for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend," the first project for the Netflix-TWC (The Weinstein Co.) partnership that will be released August 2015.
"People love Adam's films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages -- everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line -- not just in the US but all over the world," said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
Sander's films have grossed more than $3 billion globally and consistently rank most viewd by Netflix users.
The actor currently stars in "Men, Women & Children," now showing in theaters, and in upcoming indie drama "The Cobbler."
He is currently filming new movie "Pixels" with Sony Pictures.
Sandler's current studio commitments are not included in the Netflix deal. It's not clear if Sandler's first-look deal with Sony, his longtime home, will be impacted.
