Netflix has announced that it will show the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel at the same time that it will hit IMAX theaters. The expected release date of the second installment is on August 28, 2015.
Ted Sarandos of Netflix issued a public statement, "Fans will have unprecedented choice in how they enjoy an amazing and memorable film that combines intense action and incredible beauty."
The second installment will officially be known as the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend." The lead role will once again be assumed by Michelle Yeoh. The first installment was directed by Ang Lee and this time, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel will be directed by Yuen Wo-Ping.
The theater release of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel will only initially be limited to IMAX theaters. Viewers would have to choose watching the second installment in an IMAX theater or watching it on Netflix. The Verge reports a Variety post that IMAX is betting on a successful Chinese movie premiere, since Netflix has no presence in the Chinese mainland.
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" film was first shown in 2000. The martial arts movie directed by Ang Lee was produced with a budget of $17 million USD and the conversation of the characters is in Chinese Mandarin. The movie was an international success earning over $213.5 million USD, in worldwide sales. In the United States alone, it earned over half of the total sales at $128 million USD. The film is currently the highest grossing film in America, where characters speak a language other than English. The first installment garnered over 40 various awards, including two Golden Globe Awards and four BAFTA. The producers hope to replicate its earlier success with the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel.
It is worth noting that the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel is currently shooting in New Zealand. Both the first and second installment is based on Wang Du Lu's Crane-Iron Pentalogy.
