Steven Gerrard's future at Anfield remains uncertain at this point, but club manager Brendan Rodgers said in a Liverpool transfer news that they are planning to keep the veteran.
Gerrard, who has spent his entire club career at Liverpool since he was just a teen prospect, is playing in the final eight months of his contract with the Reds.
In an interview with Liverpool Echo, Liverpool boss Rodgers admitted that he is undecided on what he intends to do with Gerrard, but he insisted that they will strongly consider offering another contract extension to their team captain.
"It is something we are looking at as a club, and with Steven and how he feels," Rodgers said in the Liverpool transfer news. "He is still in a real good physical condition. He's 34, he trains every day, he never needs a day's rest. He wants to work."
The 34-year-old recently announced his retirement from the England national soccer team as he is determined to focus on his club career. However, things are not looking good for Liverpool at this point after winning in just two of their first six Barclays Premier League games this season.
Some fans are blaming Gerrard for their poor performance this season, but Rodgers had all praises for the 34-year-old midfielder, who has scored two goals in six Premier League games.
"This is a genuine superstar and this country hasn't produced many of them," Rodgers said of Gerrard. "He's been a genuine world-class player for so many years. How he still strikes a ball, there aren't many like him, both with his passing and his shooting. He will play and prepare himself right the way through to the very end."
Rodgers also insisted in the Liverpool transfer news that Gerrard's dedication and professionalism in unquestionable. Despite their shaky start this season, the 41-year-old insisted that Liverpool players still look up to Gerrard, calling the veteran as "catalyst" of their club.
"With him in our team he's been a real catalyst for everything the team has done in the last 18 months," Rodgers said. "Some of the criticism he's had shows the level he has been playing at consistently. The fact that teams deem that they need to put someone on him as a marker shows you the influence of his game."
