A Walgreens customer felt cheated when they were charged more than the advertised price for a product. The store has promised to look into the issue.
The incident occurred when the customer bought a sunscreen marked at $8.49. However, upon checking the receipt, they discovered they had been charged $9.79 instead. Walgreens has stated it will report this discrepancy to its senior management for further action.
Walgreens Overcharging Incident Sparks Outrage
A Walgreens shopper identified by their username J.M.H., the stand up (@JudgeJudysBuuty), expressed frustration on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, questioning the legality of the store's pricing practices.
J.M.H. indirectly called out Walgreens in their post, questioning if others had noticed the store's frequent overpricing. They suggested customers compare the receipt to the listed prices, highlighting an incident where they were overcharged for sunscreen. They noted that this was not the first occurrence of such an issue.
The post, which drew attention by tagging multiple accounts, including Walgreens, the Federal Trade Commission, competitor CVS, and a local news outlet, sparked further discussions. One user advised J.M.H. to address the issue directly with Walgreens' customer service for resolution.
However, resolving the issue at customer service was not a satisfactory solution for the shopper, as they indicated this had been a recurring problem.
An X user recommended taking the issue to customer service for a refund. In response, J.M.H. expressed their frustration, noting that despite following this advice, it was the third time they had encountered such problems at Walgreens.
Meanwhile, The U.S. Sun reports that Walgreens responded to the discussion thread, wanting to assist J.M.H. in finding a solution to the pricing issue.
The retailer apologized and offered to file a formal complaint on J.M.H.'s behalf, assuring that the matter would be escalated to the appropriate leadership for attention. However, J.M.H. did not reply to Walgreens' initial attempt to help.
Persisting in their efforts to address the shopper's concerns, Walgreens reached out again, asking for more details via a private message so they could directly inform their leadership about the price discrepancy.
Ongoing Overcharging Issues at Walgreens
J.M.H. is not alone in facing overcharging issues at Walgreens, as another shopper encountered similar problems with incorrect pricing.
In a report by Distractify in September, a shopper named Bren highlighted a case where a box of hot chocolate was incorrectly labeled at Walgreens. Bren also accused the store employees of misleading shoppers while she was at the store.
As one of the largest retailers in the nation, Walgreens is grappling with significant challenges, as CBS reported. Shoppers nationwide have accused the company of failing to uphold pricing promises.
Despite advertising great deals and additional savings with a Walgreens reward card, these promises often fall short.
Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster's investigation revealed concerning results. The Attorney General's office found overcharges and deceptive pricing practices at nearly every visited store, which they described as disturbing.
Furthermore, an I-Team investigation in the Boston area found similar issues. An example included clearance items displayed at reduced prices but rang up at full price at the register. In one instance, a package of pens advertised for $1.29 was charged at the original price of $2.49, underscoring the pervasive nature of the problem.
