Costco customers who frequently return items might soon lose their membership.
The wholesale giant is known for having one of the most flexible return policies in the U.S. retail industry. It allows customers to return most products almost immediately after purchase.
Special Return Conditions for Electronics
While Costco's return policy is notably flexible, specific products, like AirPods and other electronics, must be returned within 90 days.
However, the company may cancel its membership if customers exploit this system by making frequent returns or returning used items.
Costco's official website says the company can refuse or terminate memberships at any time.
As The Motley Fool, a private financial advice organization, reports, the most common cause of Costco membership cancellation is the misuse of its return policy. This issue leads to more membership revocations than theft, fraud, shoplifting, or even disrespectful behavior within the store.
Customers who frequently return items, even without malicious intent, might find themselves unexpectedly stripped of their membership. For instance, Maryam Nicksolat, a former Costco member, lost her membership in 2018 after she attempted to return a printer she had bought eight years prior.
Maryam Nicksolat, a Costco member since 2006, attempted to return a malfunctioning printer she bought in 2010 to her local Fairfax, Virginia store. Despite Costco's generally lenient return policy, which often doesn't set a time limit for returns on most items, Nicksolat faced rejection.
According to Business Insider, the printer was not listed under the 90-day return limit for electronics, prompting her to attempt the return.
However, a store manager denied the return upon her arrival, explaining that Nicksolat had already made excessive returns. After escalating the matter to customer service, she spoke with Jeff Long, Costco's senior vice president of Northeast operations.
Long informed her that her 12-year membership would be terminated and he would follow up with a formal letter.

The letter Nicksolat received confirmed the cancellation of her membership and stated that she could not appeal the decision.
Costco refunded her for the annual membership fee, the printer, and the ink purchased. In the letter, Long expressed that the frequent returns suggested dissatisfaction with Costco's products, concluding, "We are unable to satisfy you as a member."
Costco's Return Policy Challenges and Limits
This incident highlights a broader issue with Costco's return policy. Some New York and Texas stores actively monitor return patterns, particularly flagging frequent and expensive returns.
According to a three-year veteran Costco employee, the lenient policy has led to extreme situations, including a customer who returned two dirty toilets purchased online more than five years ago.
Costco's policy aims to accommodate customers but also imposes limits to prevent abuses that strain the system and affect service quality.
The U.S. Sun reports that Costco's renowned return policy promises customer satisfaction, offering refunds on all products.
However, there are exceptions. Electronics must be returned within 90 days, and diamonds over 1.00 carat need original paperwork and a 48-hour return window. Items like cigarettes, alcohol, batteries, and tires cannot be returned due to legal or lifespan limitations.
Additionally, special orders and custom installations are only eligible for returns if under warranty. Non-refundable items include gold bullion, silver coins, shop cards, airline tickets, and event tickets.
Despite these restrictions, Costco allows membership cancellations with refunds anytime if customers are unhappy.
