A popular card store in California has closed down after facing financial difficulties and increasing costs.

Customers expressed deep sadness over the closure, lamenting the loss of a place that reminded them of their childhood.

Fresno Hallmark Store Closes After 37 Years

A well-known Hallmark store in Fresno, California, has permanently closed its doors. The store, opened since 1987, ceased operations at noon on May 9, according to AOL.

Margie's Hallmark Shop, named in honor of the mother of the owner Tom Pearce, was originally established by his parents. As it closed, the once plentiful shelves were nearly empty, with just a few greeting cards remaining.

"The profits just aren't there anymore. I'm essentially paying to keep the doors open," Pearce explained. He highlighted the financial strain, noting, "The costs are just too high. Everything has gone up."

Pearce has been particularly affected by a 30% increase in his utility bill this year, despite using less power. Further financial challenges included a lease renewal that required a 3% annual increase, which came at a time when his finances were already stretched thin.

Adding to his woes, Pearce lost $4,000 to a marketing firm that failed to deliver on its services before going out of business. The rising minimum wage and increasing labor costs have also significantly impacted his business operations.

Challenges Mount for Fresno's Longtime Hallmark Store

Pearce faces a tough reality as he shuts down his business. Pearce shared the complexities of running a store, emphasizing the financial burdens that come with it. "People don't realize the costs involved, like matching Social Security and Medicare contributions," he said.

Despite these contributions, Pearce's store has seen a steady decline in income while his expenses have increased. Over the past six months, profits dropped by 20% to 30% compared to the previous year.

The decline in store visits and sales has been partly due to customers opting to buy collectible Hallmark ornaments and gifts online. Pearce also encountered difficulties in getting supplies directly from Hallmark, adding to his challenges.

Traffic issues have also deterred customers. The store, located in a busy shopping center, faced increased congestion problems, partly due to a new smoke shop, leading to customer complaints.

Pearce considered relocating to rejuvenate his business but was deterred by the financial strain. Hallmark's requirement for a $50,000 investment in store upgrades, including new shelving, was more than Pearce was willing to undertake.

"It's sad," Pearce remarked. "I never planned on closing the store. It just came to a point where it wasn't sustainable anymore."

The closing of a beloved Hallmark store in Fresno has left many local shoppers feeling heartbroken. "This breaks my heart," said Fresno resident Sarah Soghomonian on the store's Facebook page. "You are the last of my childhood Sunnyside spots to be in their original location."

Following the announcement of the closure, the store quickly sold off its remaining merchandise at a 75% discount. The leftover shelving and other items were purchased by other Hallmark locations within the city.

There are still two Hallmark stores in Fresno, but unlike the independently owned store that closed, these remaining locations are operated by the corporate chain.
