J's Steaks and Subs, a popular sandwich chain that has served Pennsylvania since the late 1960s, has drastically reduced its presence from over 50 locations to just one. The newest closure has left many loyal customers disappointed and critical of the company's decision.
This significant cutback marks a major shift for the once-thriving chain, leaving only one location to continue its legacy.
Bethlehem J's Subs Closes Its Doors
The J's Subs location in Bethlehem has permanently closed down. This establishment, once part of the bustling Stefko Center until 2017, shut its doors this past March.
A sign with "Closed permanently" and a sad face was posted on the door to inform customers of the closure. A peek through the now-vacant shop's windows showed tables and chairs pushed aside, marking the end of an era.
As the store closed, it offered specials and showed its patrons a heartfelt goodbye message. "As always, thank you for choosing J's!" the message read, as reported by WFMZ. "We will miss you all," it continued, expressing the sentiments of the staff and management.
With the Bethlehem store's closure, fans of J's Subs now have only the Northampton location to visit for their favorite sandwiches and burgers.
Edwin Lozano, who owns the company that operates the chain, cited a lack of time as the reason for the closure, leaving many loyal customers wishing for more time with their beloved local spot.
The manager of J's Subs in Bethlehem has retired, closing the location. Edwin Lozano, who also owns a local brewery, told Lehigh Valley Live that he cannot manage both businesses. "I have no time to run both," Lozano explained, highlighting the challenges of juggling multiple enterprises.

In contrast, the Northampton franchise of J's Subs is set to remain open. Daniel Strain, the owner of the Northampton location, has been at the helm since 1986. His wife, Candace, confirmed to the media outlet that they have no plans to close the last standing J's Subs shop. This assurance comes as a relief to fans of the franchise in the area.
Fans Plead for Northampton J's Subs to Stay Open
On the Northampton site's Facebook page, devoted fans of J's Subs have voiced their desire for the restaurant to keep its doors open. "Food and service are awesome. Prices are good. I just ate there last night. I love this place. Please don't ever close," one enthusiastic fan shared.
Responding to the community's support, Brandon Clawson, the manager of the Northampton J's Subs and Strain's son-in-law, reassured fans. "We're the last J standing, and nothing changes here. It's business as usual for us," he stated during an interview with WMFZ.
While many patrons remain loyal, some have been disappointed, noting restaurant quality changes. "It's nothing like it used to be," commented another user on Facebook, reminiscing about past visits.
"The Northampton location is a complete letdown. I used to love the cheeseburger subs when I was a kid. And their fries were always perfectly crispy."
Criticism has also been directed at the recently shuttered Bethlehem location, with a former customer noting, "They shouldn't have moved. Since they left the shopping center, I forgot they existed. Big mistake on their part."
Despite these challenges, Lozano remains optimistic about the brand's future. "I am keeping the J's franchise and hopefully will reopen some of the shuttered locations if/when I get time," he told Lehigh Valley Live, signaling potential revival plans for the beloved chain.
