Boston Celtics roster news update revealed that the team suffered a huge setback as Rajon Rondo is expected to miss the start of the 2014-15 NBA season due to a broken hand.
Multiple reports confirmed on Friday that Rondo successfully underwent surgery to repair a fractured left metacarpal, which would require six to eight weeks of recovery and rehabilitation. According to the Boston Globe, Rondo hurt his hand in a fall at his home.
With Rondo out for at least their first 10 games in the upcoming season, the Celtics are expected to rely on Phil Pressey, who started in 11 games during his rookie year last season.
Marcus Smart, the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, is also expected to get a lot of opportunity to shine as he is also tipped to be considered as the Celtics' starting point guard on opening night.
Rondo's injury could affect Boston's approach in the upcoming season as most experts believe that the Celtics are interested in seeing how Rondo can lead the team before the trade deadline.
Previous Boston Celtics roster news updates suggested that the squad would consider trading Rondo before next season's trade deadline. The injury could be a blessing in disguise for them, though, as they will have the opportunity to see how the team will perform without the All-Star point guard.
Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said on Tuesday that rumors about their desire to trade Rondo are not true, reiterating that he intends to keep the 28-year-old in Boston.
"It's my goal to keep Rondo here," Grousbeck said in a recent Boston Celtics roster news via ESPN. "I think we all want that. And I actually honestly think -- he should speak for himself -- I think Rajon wants to stay or would be very happy to stay. And we'll see how this season goes and how the negotiations go, but he's proud to be a Celtic."
However, the Celtics cannot deny the fact that they could be in a tough situation as the trade deadline approaches because Rondo reportedly turned down an extension as he intends to test free agency next summer.
And once Rondo hits free agency, the Celtics will run risk of losing him for nothing as several teams are expected to make a strong push to acquire him next summer.
