'Game Of Thrones' actor to star in 'The Maze Runner' sequel
Aiden Gillen, popularly known as Petyr Baelish/Littlefinger in HBO's blockbuster show "Game of Thrones" is officially set to be one of the main antagonists in the dystopian "The Maze Runner" sequel, "Maze Runner: Scorch Trials."
According to reports by The Hollywood Reporter, Gillen will be playing Janson, otherwise known as Rat-Face in the series, villain to protagonist Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and (SPOILER) to the other Gladers who survived at the end of "The Maze Runner."
The movie, directed by Wes Ball, topped last weekend's box office with $32.5 million.
"The Maze Runner" also grossed $37.6 million from 50 markets for a worldwide total of $81.5 million (the film began rolling out in several territories last weekend). The film has yet to open in 27 markets, including nine of the top 15.
In contrast to the Hollywood Reporter article that describes Janson as a "villain," fans argue that the description is not so accurate as told in the book.
SPOILERS FOR "THE SCORCH TRIALS" AFTER THIS POINT.
According to the books, Janson is a liaison for WICKED, the organization behind the maze from the first installment and the creator of the Scorch Trials.
His character only appears at the beginning of the book ("Scorch Trials") as a catalyst that begins the second round of testing that aims to reveal whatever it is WICKED is searching for.
The movie sequel is set to start filming in late October.
With the episodic nature of the "Scorch Trials", it is a possible scenario that the producers introduce Janson's role in the same way as "The Hunger Games" has expanded main antagonist President Snow, or the way "Divergent" altered Jeanine's (Kate Winslet) to appear throughout the first movie.
"Maze Runner: Scorch Trials" will hit the theaters on September 18, 2015.
