A "Fashion Police" update has revealed that Kathy Griffin is a frontrunner to be the new host of the hit E! program. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the comedienne could possibly replace her good friend Joan Rivers, who died unexpectedly last September 4.
The 53-year-old is said to be Joan Rivers' protégé, and is considered by many as one of the closest contenders to fill in the hosting post left by the TV icon.
The Hollywood Reporter added that other names - both male and female - are also being considered. The ''Fashion Police" update clarified though that no formal discussions have been made with any of the possible replacements.
"Fashion Police" released an update last week that the show is confirmed to return after the death of its iconic host, Joan Rivers. In an official statement issued by E!, as reported by ABC News, the network received the blessing from Joan Rivers' 46-year-old daughter, Melissa Rivers, to officially continue the show.
The late comedienne's daughter is also an executive producer of the show.
ABC News published the statement, which read: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of Joan Rivers and, for the last two weeks, have turned our attention to honoring her memory on all of our platforms."
The "Fashion Police" update continued: "We have also thought long and hard about what Joan would have wanted as it pertains to the future of Fashion Police. We decided, with Melissa Rivers' blessing, that Joan would have wanted the franchise to continue."
According to ABC News, the show will return in January 2015 when it covers the Golden Globe Awards.
E!Online was one of the first to report about Joan Rivers' news about her cardiac arrest. The "Fashion Police" host reportedly stopped breathing during a minor endoscopic procedure at Yorkville Endoscopy medical clinic.
Joan Rivers passed away in September 4. She was 81 years old.
