Negative Space In Design: 3 Ways How To Effectively Use It

| By

Negative space is the technical design term used when referring to the non-occupied space that has no functional use for man. It's different from circulation space which means simply as an empty space. No indication of functionality is attributed to this. Many people fail to recognize the importance of negative space because they are unaware of its roles.

There is no laid down purpose ascribed to negative space. However, this does not mean one has to neglect it altogether. Its consequences override any purpose because these implications affect the acceptability of the design whether related to interior, print or web designing. The use of space is something not obvious but its presence is felt. Subconsciously people notice it even if they focus their mind on the graphic images in a website.

For this reason, there should be efficient use and the 3 ways how to do it are the following:

1. Strike a balance

Never take advantage of this space. Overdoing will lead to jumble. Many things brought together in a single page will confuse any reader causing him to look for the next webpage that has a more pleasing look. On the contrary, too much negative space results in having a blank space offering nothing but void.

Best option is to just balance the use of space by utilizing the suitable percentage of functional and negative spaces. The appropriate size for the empty space is between 20 to 40%. Meanwhile, use at most 80% for the functional space. This way, clutter is avoided.

2. Highlight only the important

With the efficient use of negative space, the most important messages are delivered to the viewers. Choose only the matters you want to highlight. It can be an image depicting the essence of the story or maybe it's a piece of furniture illuminating the living room. Sorting the rest of the furniture and providing a special place for that one beautiful orange couch will do well. Another way to do this is the use of contrasting color. Similarly, alternating placement of thick and thin space may present abstract themes.

3. Arrange in a symmetrical or asymmetrical manner

Symmetry is good because it shows balance while asymmetry gives a flavor of visual textures. Combine both of these in designing. Select a variety of furniture such as an oblong shaped table. Mixing text and image in a print material wile creating symmetry is a foolproof way to please the readers because the negative space is blended well.
