It looks like the backdoor pilot episode for 'CSI: Cyber' during CSI season 14 was a success since CBS promptly scheduled a mid-season debut for the new spinoff.
The new show's lead character, Patricia Arquette, was already introduced as Special Agent Avery Ryan from the FBI's specialized cyber crime division during the CSI: Las Vegas episode.
In the episode, she worked with the Las Vegas team to track down a cyber blackmailer who was using an innocent woman's face for a sex website. He then used compromising videos to threaten and extort money from famous individuals.
Joining Arquette for 'CSI: Cyber' will be Shad Moss or Bow Wow, who will play cyber-intrusion expert Brody "Baby Face" Nelson, and 'Dawson's Creek' star James Van Der Beek, who will portray FBI Agent Elijah Mundo, "an expert in battlefield forensics recruited by Special Agent Avery Ryan for his war efforts in Afghanistan."
The team will also have 'Community' actor Charley Koontz as Agent Daniel Grummitz and 'Numb3rs' actor Peter MacNicol as Assistant Director Stavros Sifter, Arquette's supervisor in the series
The most recent addition to the specialized team, according to TV Line, is '90210' star Luke Perry. As recurring character FBI Agent Nick Dalton, Perry's character will reportedly shed light to Arquette's Special Agent Ryan.
The publication describes Perry's character as "destined" to join the division in Washington DC. After a "'classified' falling out" with FBI, he will aim to become a 'futurist' for the sector.
He seems to be posting a threat to Arquette's character since he supposedly holds "many secrets to Avery's backstory."
'CSI: Cyber' focuses on "illegal activities that start in the mind, live online, and play out in the real world." It was reportedly based on real-life work by cyber psychologist Mary Aiken.
'CSI:Miami' and 'CSI:New York,' as past offshoots, did well during their runs. Will 'CSI: Cyber' be more interesting than the other spinoffs?
