Portsmouth and Pompey (the city’s nickname) trended in England recently. It is not because Portsmouth FC beat Manchester United because the two clubs' path won't cross anytime soon. Those words trended because of something out of this world, literally. What buzzed the residents of Portsmuth, UFO.
On September 21, many residents of city from England were shocked by the news that an unidentified flying object passed over the south coast of Portsmouth and was even captured in a photo by Lewis Rogers, a 26-year old animation director.
"I was the only one who saw it who was quick enough to take the picture. I definitely believe in UFOs. I often look up at the sky in the evening wondering if there is anything or anyone else out there," Rogers told reports.
The photo features a strange shape with color that is entirely different from the clouds that surround it. This photo instantly spread through the web and people who saw and didn't see it have their respective opinions. The hashtag #PompeyUFO even trended for a moment.
Other people who saw it were also left shocked by the sighting.
“It didn’t look like a cloud and it was moving very fast,” said Johnny Blackwell who lives nearby the area were the UFO was seen.
“It was a grey, disc-like shape. I don’t know much about military craft, but this was very fast-moving.”
For Lauren Young of the weather agency Met Office, the supposed Portsmouth UFO image does not really prove that it was indeed an alien property.
‘After looking at the images, I can say the object is nothing to do with the weather.
‘It is not meteorological and is not a cloud.’
University of Portsmouth's Karen Master has the same opinion on the Portsmouth UFO sighting.
“Given the pictures show a dark object against a daytime sky, it is clearly not an astronomical object.”
Over the web, some users think that the strangeness of its shape is enough to speculate that there other life outside of the earth.
"Watching the sky and saw what looked like a UFO! Starting to believe in what people have been saying," wrote Josh Harcourt-Kelly on his Twitter post.
