The action role-playing game is finally back after the second sequel was released in 2011. "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" release date revealed has been moved to a later date.
In 2009, Polish video game developer CD Projekt SA released the first "The Witcher" video games. Published by Atari, the role-playing game is based on Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy short stories set in a medieval fantasy world.
Sapkowski created "The Witcher" short story in 1986 and won third place in a magazine contest. Apart from video games, adaptations of the story include comic books published from 1993-1995, and a film titled "The Hexer" in 2001, followed by a television series with the same title of 12 episodes in 2012.
The franchise focuses on the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, the main character in Sapkowski's stories. Geralt is familiarized with the art of witcher-work, which is described as a skill in monster killing apart from other abilities.
"The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" was released 2011 for OS X, Microsoft Windows, Linus and Xbox 360. According to GamesRadar.com, the sequel received positive feedback from critics with the game's strong points in graphics, combat mechanics, environment, storytelling, customization and immersion. "The Witcher 2 embodies everything that's good about PC development, everything that makes it, in my mind, the best platform out there," shares another game reviewer, GamePro.
"The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" has since won awards from various award-giving bodies such as best story, best RPG, best adaptation, Game of the Year, best graphics, and best PC game - totaling to over 50 awards.
Early in 2013, creators officially announced the production of "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" through Game Informer Magazine. In the cover story it was revealed that "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" would be "an open world 30 times larger than the previous game."
