Team owner Jerry Jones reiterated in a recent Dallas Cowboys Schedule & Roster news that they did not sign Michael Sam to their practice squad just to make headlines.
NFL insider Peter King recently revealed that National Football League officials contacted several teams and asked them to consider signing Sam, who failed to make it into the final roster of the St. Louis Rams.
"A league official contacted multiple teams asking if they had evaluated Sam as a probable practice squad player," King said via CBS New York. "Sam and the NFL avoided a nightmare situation when he signed with the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys."
In a Dallas Cowboys schedule and roster interview with 105.3 KRLD-FM, Jones denied that the league contacted them to consider signing Sam to their practice team.
"No we were not [contacted]," Jones stressed. "That would not be something that I have ever done, is visit with the league."
Jones pointed out that signing Sam was a football decision, saying that the Cowboys are in dire need for defensive linemen and pass-rushers, and they felt that the former Missouri standout fits the billing.
"He's a pass-rusher," Jones said in the Dallas Cowboys schedule and roster interview. "He has a lot to go when he comes to working in space or a lot to go when it comes to special teams. It's hard to be just a situational pass-rusher if you can't be a special teams player, so he's got a long way to go. He's in a good place."
The famous Cowboys owner also denied reports that they are planning to maximize Sam's popularity by selling the defensive lineman's No. 46 practice squad jersey.
Sam, the first-openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL, performed well for the Rams in four preseason games where he posted three tackles, including two against Cleveland Browns rookie Johnny Manziel.
