Jumpstarting the career of now A-list actor and one of the top-paid artists Tom Cruise is his role as Lieutenant Maverick Mitchell in the 1986 flick "Top Gun". This action drama movie hails from the imagination of Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr., and revolves around the story of a young pilot learning to become one of the top flyers under the guidance of a non-military instructor. "Top Gun" took in $300 million in worldwide box office sales, and easily became on of the top grossing film in its time.
Apart from Tom Cruise, the film cast members included Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tim Robbins, and Meg Ryan.
Talks of a sequel surfaced in late 2010 as Paramount Pictures offered Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott the idea, according to New York Magazine. A year after, Tom Cruise confirmed that indeed "Top Gun 2" was in the works and that he would reprise the role of "Maverick". It was also revealed that production would begin the following year, with a release date of 2014. However, the untimely death of Scott in 2012 would ultimately halt the entire production.
Early this year, in an interview with Huffington Post, Bruckheimer shared his insights about "Top Gun 2" release date. He said, "We've been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we're getting closer and closer. "Don and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it."
In the same interview, Bruckheimer shares about "Top Gun 2" release date and plot: "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."
Apart from Cruise, Val Kilmer has also expressed his excitement in joining "Top Gun 2".
