Social media sites are filled with clips of celebrities and non-celebrities dumping ice cold water on their head to promote awareness of the disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This activity is also meant to encourage people to donate to the research to find the cure for the said disease. It is unclear who started this challenge but this surely helps the cause of the ALS patients. According to the social media site's data team, over 28 million people talked about the charity-activity, either liking or commenting on someone's post. Around 2.4 million videos related to it were uploaded. Regarding the origin, the data team found out that the spread structure is centered around Boston.
“Many attribute the challenge to former Boston College baseball player, Pete Frates, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012, which could explain the concentration in Boston,” Facebook said in its own newsroom.
Globally, the United States is obviously the biggest when it comes to ALS Ice Bucket Challenge completed. The North American country is followed by Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Mexico. Brazil, Germany, Philippines, Puerto Rico, and India round up the top 10.
Many celebrities have participated in ASL Ice Bucket Challenge, reason why it easily spread throughout the globe. Others also take advantage of the trend to send more meaningful message to the society. Actor Orlando Jones has joined in on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge but instead of using ice water, he dumped himself a pale of bullets. He said that it is his way of representing those who have fought for human rights and injustice, obviously, talking about the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson City in Missouri.
