Lorde's VMA Win Of Best Rock Video Makes History But Not Everyone Is Happy About It; Rolling Stone Editor Claims The Award Was Scripted?

| By

Lorde's VMA Win Of Best Rock Video last Sunday has made history in the industry of music. The singer from New Zealand became the first female to win in such category. Second, she was the youngest to ever win such award. The 17-year old singer beat the likes of 3-time winners Linkin Park, as well as Imagine Dragons, Arctic Monkeys, and The Black Keys.

"Is there like a specific place I'm supposed to be looking?" Lorde asked with a surprised face during her acceptance speech. "This is super crazy and I'm super grateful."

Well, it indeed sounded crazy to many rock and music fans, including an editor of a renowned rock magazine.

Australian Rolling Stone Editor-in-chief Mathew Coyte said the difference Lorde's song compared to her rivals' is like "chalk and cheese."

"Royals is by no means a rock song by anyone's definition, it's an electronic track. It seems odd that it wasn't in a category against Katy Perry and Ariana Grande.

"It seems like they wanted to give [Lorde] an award and Ariana Grande an award and decided to put her in rock," he said, adding that the VMAs appeared to be a "bit loose" with their categories.

"I can't think of any situation where I watched the MTV VMAs and not been surprised by a category."

Even internet users were infuriarated by the handling of Lorde's VMA win in a category they claim was not the exact place for Royals.

"Lorde is not rock music. lorde is the sound of your thumb scrolling through tumblr on your phone," tweeted a disappointed fan shortly after Lorde's VMA Win.

"Still angry Lorde was put into the rock category (SHE IS NOT) and robbed the @ArcticMonkeys" says Twitter user @krunkpony.

"Lorde won "best rock video" ... that's like giving "best rap video" to Coldplay," says another user named @IanKenyonNFL.
