Guardians of the Galaxy is still on top of the box office after the weekend and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles continue to surprise. If I Stay managed to climb the top three and The Giver continue to disappoint. These movies fared differently in theaters but no one from them make the biggest story. What most people are shocked about is the Sin City: A Dame To Kill For flop. The sequel of the 2005 movie failed to live up to the expectation of the fans and the brain trust behind the movie.
According to Rentrak, the movie, which was based on a series of neo-noir comics by Frank Miller, didn't make the top 5 in the US box office for the period of August 22-24. That is very low especially for a film top-billed by the likes of Jessica Alba, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, and Bruce Willis. Guardians of the Galaxy remained as the number one movie with $17 million, followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles ($16.8 million), and teen romance movie If I Stay ($16.3 million).
The Sin City: A Dame to Kill For flop is called by many analysts as one of the most shocking stories this 2014.
"The big story of the week is not the box-office race," David Mumpower, analyst for Box Office Prophets said. "Instead, it is the shocking failure of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which would have been more aptly titled A Dame to Ignore."
Mumpower attributes the Sin City: A Dame to Kill For flop to the interval of times that the first and second Sin City movie was shown.
Meanwhile, Erik Lomis, distribution chief of the Weinstein Co. that handled Sin City sequel was complete disappointed with the result, especially because they estimated a $15 million first week.
"This is a complete miss. Obviously, we're very, very disappointed in the numbers. We definitely did not see it coming in like this."
