Startrek's George Takei Says He Learns More About Handling Of Social Media Through Trial And Error After His Controversial Post

| By

Startrek's George Takei is probably the most amusing 77-year old Facebook user. With 7.5 million followers, people from all over the world frequent to his page to see and comment about his posts, most of them funny and geeky. However, there was one post that he made that infuriated some social media users. This event , according to Takei, has helped him learn more about how the internet works and become more sensitive about things.

"I learn from each of the responses that we get from the memes that we post," said Takei. "Particularly on this one. I was enlightened on the various degrees of disability of people who use wheelchairs. I learn something every day. And life should be a continuing learning experience."

Takei was talking about a photo he posted depicting an elderly woman who was able to stand because of alcohol. It has the caption: 'There has been a miracle in the alcohol isle (sic)."

Users weren't happy about it and immediately, the Japanese actor was bombarded with hate messages. He was branded as offensive, ignorant, and other bad words you can think of.

"I'm disappointed in you, Mr Takei," said one user. "This kind of joke has become all too common. There are many many people who have limited mobility and can walk or stand for short periods of time, but depend on crutches or chairs for longer distances. A photo was taken of this person without their permission and posted on the internet for a cheap and ignorant laugh. I would not have expected you to perpetuate it."

In response , Startrek's George Takei removed the post.

"I was enlightened on the various degrees of disability of people who use wheelchairs," he said. "One should have the ability to apologise for the mistakes. And there's a realisation of one's ignorance of some life realities."

"By trial and error I found that the best way to do it was through humour."

Aside from his humorous posts, Takei also use Facebook to promote Allegiance, a musical based on the experience he had when he was staying at interment camps.
