The editing of Laverne Cox's Wikipedia page drew the ire of many people, referring to the act as discriminatory towards the Orange is the New Black star and the group that she represents. Cox is a transgender actress who made headlines for her role in the Netflix original dark comedy. Recently, she landed on the TIMES magazine cover, making her the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of the said magazine.
However, a few days ago, somebody edited her Wikipedia page. From being referred to as "a real transgender woman", she was called a "a real man pretending to be a woman." This has quite a stir since transgenders and those who belong in the LGBT community are still struggling to get accepted by the society. This is despite the fact that more and more US states are voting in favor of same-sex marriage.
Turned out, the one who did the editing was from the House of Representatives, something which infuriated the public even more. Because of the incident, computers coming from the House have been banned from editing Wikipedia pages for at least one month. This will be the third time that the government branch gets blocked from the encyclopedia website.
As per report by New York Daily news:
"More than 30 edits were made since Monday in reference to transgender people under the Congress' IP address. The most recent edit changed information on the hit Netflix series 'Orange Is The New Black' page, writing that actor Laverne Cox -- a transgender woman in real life and on the show -- was "a man pretending to be a woman."
The user has already been traced and several other Wiki users have called on to ban the account.
"It's just another silly ruse by the puerile male intern/staffer desperate to become the House's very own jester," wrote one user, John Valeron. "He is quite simply a criminal, illegally misusing US Govt property and Internet service. He should be fired and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
