Nokia-Microsoft Deal to Finally Conclude This Friday

| By

The Microsoft-Nokia deal is expected to be concluded on Friday, acording to Reuters.

The $7.5 billion deal that was first announced in September last year was delayed due to anti-trust authorities in various countries, who raised objections. According to Computer World, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said that the deal transactions would be concluded by April 25.

CNET said once the deal is closed, the acquired entity could be called Microsoft Mobile Oy.

According to PC Magazine, Microsoft said that "we have completed the steps necessary to finalize Microsoft's acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services business."

The deal was slated for closure March 31, but could not be completed due to the delay in obtaining agreement from Asian anti-trust authorities, including China, which gave its approval about two weeks ago.

Nokia was also involved in a face-off with tax authorities in India, which asked Nokia to pay export duty on devices manufactured at the company's facility in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Other details from the deal have also emerged, revealing that Microsoft will not acquire Nokia's South Korean facility. Nokia's 21 employees in China are also expected to join Microsoft.

According to Computer World, analysts are not sure if Microsoft can face Apple and the smartphone market relying on Android, its newly acquired device design and manufacturing capabilities notwithstanding.

"Researcher IDC, which once believed Windows Phone would have a larger share of smartphone shipments than Apple's iOS by 2016, recently forecast that Windows Phone will account for a 4.8% share that year, compared to Apple's 14.7% and Google's 77.5%," it said.

After the announcement Monday, Microsoft's shares increased by 8 cents to $ 40.09, CNET said.
