Google Announces Partnership with Luxottica for Glass Features

| By

Google Inc. announced on Monday that it has partnered with Luxottica Group, the creator of Ray-Ban and Oakley frames, to include the features on Google Glass.

Google is looking to provide more mainstream appeal to its wearable computing device with its deal with Luxottica, according to the Verge. Luxottica will develop exclusive eyeglass frames that will work on Glass.

Glass features a thumbnail-sized screen above the wearer's right eye that lets the user view Internet content. The device also includes a camera that takes hands-free pictures and video, which has raised concerns about privacy. So far, Google has only sold the device to a small group of test subjects called "Explorers", Associated Press reported.

A Google-provided FAQ stated that Luxottica and Google will work together on designing the new version of Glass, and Luxottica will take care of manufacturing and distribution. However, the FAQ did not say when the new version of Glass will be available, the Verge reported.

"You're not going to see Glass on your favorite Oakleys or Ray-Bans tomorrow, but today marks the start of a new chapter in Glass's design," a Google+ post said.

Google has taken other actions to make Glass more mainstream, Associated Press reported. In January, Google released four frame styles, which cost an additional $225 and can be outfitted with prescription lenses. The company announced last week that fashion accessory maker Fossil Group is developing an Internet-connected wristwatch that runs Google's Android software on mobile devices.

Luxottica has a 12.4 percent market share, making it the biggest manufacturer of eyewear, the Verge reported. The company's control of LensCrafters and Sunglass Hut will give Luxottica the chance to sell Google Glass in more than 5,000 retail stores.

Google said it is looking to start selling the updated Google Glass later this year, Associated Press reported. The price for the new Glass will not be announced until close to the sale date.
