Scrabble enthusiasts and others will have a say in the game's new word according to a press release from the maker Hasbro Friday.
The change helps the game become current with new working in the social media and technology worlds like hashtag and selfie the press release reported.
"The SCRABBLE Word Showdown will let fans nominate and vote on words that are fun and relevant for today's players," Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president of marketing at Hasbro said in a statement. "We are excited to see which word rises to the top and makes its way into The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary" Berkowitz said in the statement.
The new word will also be added in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, and is the first addition to the Scrabble Players Dictionary since the game's release in 2005.
"Our language changes faster than ever today," Peter Sokolowski, Editor at Large at Merriam-Webster said in a statement. "It's great to include a word in the new edition that dedicated SCRABBLE players are eager to use on the board."
Nominations are being accepted on Hasbro's Game Night Facebook page until March 28.
Hasbrook will then introduce the final sixteen words selected out of all the nominations, which can include words people use but have not risen to popularity, or ones no one has thought of before the press release reported.
Hasbro will announce the winning word April 10, which will be printed in the fifth edition Merriam-Webster's Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, the book of words used in the game in August.
The word will also be available in electronic forms of the game including Facebook, Apple's iPhone, iPad, and Android according to the press release.
The game will be on sale anyplace that has books for purchase.
Scrabble is one of Hasbro's many games which include Transformers, Monopoly, Play-Doh, My Little Pony, Magic: The Gathering, Nerf, and Littlest Pet Shop the press release reported.
