Oops! Twitter may have made a bit of a mistake when it comes to your security. The company accidentally sent out a number of password reset emails on Monday evening due to a system error.
The emails were the type that the firm usually sends when an attacker is taking over an account. In this case, though, it looks as if the accounts that received this email are safe. Someone at Twitter hit the wrong button and accidentally sent an onslaught of password reset emails to people who didn't really need them, according to Tech Crunch.
The emails themselves stated that "Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a website or service not associated with twitter. We've reset your password to prevent accessing your account," according to The Inquirer.
Since these emails were sent out, Twitter has blamed a system error. That said, those who received the emails still needed to reset their details, despite the fact that the whole issue was a false alarm, according to BBC News.
"We unintentionally sent some password reset notices tonight due to a system error," said Twitter in a statement. "We apologize to the affected users for the inconvenience."
It's good news that users weren't hacked, though they still have to reset their password and details. That said, it's probably better to have too much security rather than too little--despite the fact that it may cause some irritation to users.
