Kickstarter is one of the most successful crowdfunding sources in existence and now, it's reached a new milestone. Today, Kickstarter reached its one billionth dollar pledged, according to Gamespot.
The company announced on Monday that it passed $1 billion in pledges. A grand total of 5.7 million people have contributed to Kickstarter projects. In fact, half of the sum has been pledged in the past 12 months alone, according to CNET. That's a long way from when Kickstarter began in 2009. At the time, users raised $3,900 in the first month.
In order to celebrate the milestone, Kickstarter actually put together some interactive graphics for users to see exactly where all of the funding has come from and how far Kickstarter has grown since it first began. The $1 billion comes from 224 countries and territories across all seven continents. The largest amount of donations come from the United States, followed by the United Kingdom and Canada.
Kickstarter and its competitor, Indiegogo, have become the go-to sites for funding projects, according to CNET. Entrepreneurs, inventors and others all hope to have their projects funded by the populace on these sites. Many of them give incentives to their donors, offering finished products to those who help out.
