Sony is set to announce the release of its virtual reality headset for the Playstation 4 console during the 2014 Game Developers Conference.
The conference will take place in San Francisco, CA on March 17, according to Gamespot.
While rumors of the PS4 headset have been going on for the past year, TechRadar received a tip from an inside source who had spent time using the headset.
"The quality and resolution are really, really good," the source said. "People will definitely be impressed with what Sony's built."
Sony's virtual reality headset was expected to be announced at Gamescom last August, as well as the Tokyo Game Show last September, Gamespot reported. The announcement never came at either event because, according to the source, Sony wanted more time to make sure the device is ready to be official unveiled.
"Sony has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it," the source said.
The Oculus Rift, Sony's competitor in virtual reality headsets, has taken the opposite approach of unveiling their headset, releasing it through different stages of completion, according to Gamespot.
The Oculus Rift was displayed at CES earlier this year, and has some similar features as Sony, according to Daily Mail. It uses two small LCD screens in the headset to display a 'real' image.
The Oculus Rift uses sensor technology to track the player's head movements, Daily Mail reported. The headset features motion tracking in which the display in the screen reacts depending on the way the player moves their head. The headset also uses low-latency mitigation, a technique that lets players explore the virtual world as if it were reality.
Sony's new headset is designed specifically for gaming purposes, Gamespot reported. PS4 lead system architect Marc Cerny said virtual reality can be a new tool of success for Sony over the next 10 years.
"The impact of virtual reality technologies could be pretty significant going forward in that time frame," Carny said.
