Nike has announced the release of the self-tying laces, made famous by Michael J. Fox's character Marty McFly in the "Back the Future" film series, for a 2015 debut.
The news was announced by a designer for the shoe company on Friday, according to The Daily News.
A replica of the famous shoes, worn by McFly in the film, "Back to the Future II," was unveiled by Nike in 2011, Time Newsfeed reported. The shoes were called the Nike Air Mag, and the proceeds for the unveiling went to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease.
The shoes were featured in a scene in which McFly put on a pair of sneakers which self-tied with a push of a button, giving him more time to get back into the DeLorean time machine, according to The Daily News.
Additional features to the Air Mag included soles with reinforced mesh and soles lined with rechargeable LED panels. The panels could light up for 5 hours at most. The pair of sneakers also featured an electroluminescent Nike logo on the strap, Liberty Voice reported.
Nike designer Tinker Hatfield stated the power laces will appear at the Jordan Brand's Flight Lab in New Orleans on Friday, Feb. 21, according to The Daily News.
"Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? I say YES!," Hatfield said.
It has yet to be revealed if the power laces will be featured on the actual Nike Mag shoe or if a new shoe will feature the laces, WCPO Cincinnati reported.
For "Back to the Future's" 30th anniversary, a musical based on the film will be held in London in 2015, Liberty Voice reported. There has been no news on if whoever plays Marty McFly will have on Nikes with the self-tightening power laces.
