Eight Corvettes Plunge into Sinkhole at National Corvette Museum's Sky Dome

| By

Eight corvettes fell into a 40 foot sinkhole on the interior of the National Corvette Museum's Sky Dome building in Bowling Green Ky, Wednesday.

The sinkhole measured 40 feet in width, and 25 to 30 feet in depth by the time responders arrived on scene prior to 5:30 a.m. central standard time according to the museum's website. The facility's motion detectors alarmed and police responded to the scene The Courier-Journal reported.

The cars on display included a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and a 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil, which the museum was borrowing from General Motors - a mile away from where it was made at the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant The Courier-Journal reported.

There were also a 1962 black Corvette, a 1984 PPG Pace Car, a 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette, a 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette, a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette and a 2009 white 1.5 Millionth Corvette. The museum owned six of the affected cars.

A 1983 corvette was the only car not to drop below the surface The Courier-Journal reported.

"Before we do anything, like remove the other cars, we want that assessment, so we know if there's been any structural damage to the Sky Dome," Wendell Strode, executive director at the museum told The Courier-Journal.

The museum will open back up as soon as possible.

"We'll try to get back to business as usual as soon as we can and keep moving forward," Strode told The Courier-Journal.

The surrounding community and areas were shocked by the unforeseen circumstances.

"I was stunned. What a terrible place for it to happen," Butch Hume, president of the Falls City Corvette Club in Louisville told The Courier-Journal. "I think anybody who has a Corvette was stunned when they heard that. We're all feeling the same way. Oh man, that's a shame."
