Toyota Issues Massive Recall: Prius Has a Software Glitch

| By

Toyota has issued a massive recall. The company has called back the Toyota Prius, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Tacoma and the Lexus RX 350. The recent announcement affects a whopping 960,000 vehicles in the U.S., according to The Washington Post.

The recall of the popular Prius hybrid is due to a software glitch that can potentially cause the car to stall. The recalls of the other vehicles are actually to fix separate issues. In all, the Prius recall includes 1.9 million vehicles sold from 2010 through 2014 model years, according to the LA Times. The solutions to the current issues present in the vehicles are software updates.

The software's current settings can create heat in some of the transistors in the circuits of the car. This, in turn, can damage the parts. When this happens, warning lights on the dashboard activate and in rare circumstances, the hybrid system could shut down while the care is being driven and stall.

"Toyota is trying to be more transparent, and are more aggressive than other automakers with recalls," said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with auto information company Edmunds.com, in an interview with the LA Times. "But it doesn't seem to be that big of deterrent for consumers. I don't' think there is that big of an impact from something like a software update. It is not a recall where there are crashes or people are dying."
