Google Officially Releases Chromecast to Developers

| By

Google has officially released the final version of the Google Cast Software Development Kit (SDK) which means that developers can now get their hands on it. This could help expand the library of available apps on Google's Chromecast now that developers can build Chromecast support into their applications and websites.

The first version of SDK was unveiled last July for $35, according to The Register. It provided users with Netflix, YouTube and Google Play TV in addition to other features. Yet since then, it's gone through overhaul. Now, the version being released could be a boon to developers.

"The Google Cast SDK has undergone a thoroughly overhaul since the developer preview release," stated the developer's guide for the current version. "So even if you're familiar with the technology, you should review all of the documentation here as a lot has changed."

So what does this mean for the consumer? They should keep an eye on the list of available Chromecast apps at chromecast.com/apps. In addition, interested developers can learn more about Chromecast by taking a look at the Google Chrome Blog. There, developers can learn how to incorporate SDK into existing mobile and web apps in order to bring content to the TV. In fact, they've created sample apps for Android, iOS and Chrome in order to make it easier to provide an optimized user experience on the TV screen.

Currently, there's no indication about how many apps may appear or what might be next in line for Chromecast. Yet it's likely that personal favorites may rise to the top. Keep on a watch for the new apps at the store.
