Happy birthday, Facebook! The social media site will officially see its 10th birthday on Tuesday, and it looks as if there's a big reason to celebrate. After announcing its latest earnings last week, Facebook is clearly on its way to breaking into the mobile market.
Ten years ago, Facebook launched out of the dorms of Harvard. Since then, it's made its way to Silicon Valley and into the lives of more than one billion people around the world, according to ComplexTech. Yet it hasn't been easy. During the past decade, Facebook has struggled to impress investors, found itself in the middle of multiple privacy storms and users have lately been leaving the social site in droves, according to The Inquirer. Despite all this, though, the site has managed to succeed and even thrive in recent months--just in time for its birthday.
Facebook boasts over a billion users per month and has now penetrated the mobile market. In fact, over half of its advertising revenue comes from that source, according to IT ProPortal. The firm has long said that it wanted to break into the mobile market, and now it seems to have managed. Currently, Facebook has about 945 million mobile users, 556 million of which were active during the month of December. That's a staggering 49 percent increase year on year, according to The Inquirer. In addition, Facebook is pushing forward with its new Paper app, which promises to streamline the use of Facebook on mobile phones.
That's not to say that Facebook doesn't face challenges in the future. Twitter has launched onto the scene as Facebook's rival. Long-hailed as a "Facebook-killer," it's proven to be a strong competitor, according to IT ProPortal.
In the meantime, though, Facebook's prospcects are looking up. Happy birthday, Facebook: You've made it ten years!
