Star-Shaped Cataracts: Man Still Struggles to See 10 Years After 14,000 Voltages Run Through Body to Optic Nerve

Stars formed around a 42-year-old California electrician's eye's following an electrocution American Live Wire reported Saturday.

The man endured an extreme accident where he touched 14,000 volts of power via his left shoulder while on the job American Live Wire reported. He felt the voltage in all of his body especially his optic nerve American Live reported. The optic nerve is a body part that links the back of the eye to the brain The Global Dispatch reported.

"The optic nerve is similar to any wire that conducts electricity. In this case, the extreme current and voltage that passed through this important natural wire caused damage to the optic nerve itself," Dr. Bobby Korn, an associate professor of clinical opthalmology at the University of California told American Live Wire.

Korn medically served the man American Live Wire reported. The victim saw Korn when he noticed issues with his sight American Live Wire reported.Korn found the cataracts, or condition that fogs up someone's vision in both of the man's eyes.

Light is also not able to travel into the eye and the retina according to information from American Live Wire.The visual loss is due to the cloudiness of the lens obstructing light from passing through and being focused on the retina.The man obtained some of his vision back when the cataracts were surgically removed, and another lens was put in according to information from American Live Wire.Damage still remained 10 years following the accident, but the man can take public transportation and enroll in community college with help.

The incident is printed in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The man had 20/100 vision in his right eye according to information in the journal. His left eye was just able to count fingers the journal reported.

The man could still read although he legally could not see the journal reported.
