Hyundai Finds Genesis Coupe Driveshaft Problem; Issues Recall For 10,000 Units In The US

| By

Hyundai identified a driveshaft problem with the Genesis Coupe prompting it to issue a recall affecting 10,800 units in the US from the 2013 to 2015 model years.

The recall mentioned models made between Dec. 28, 2011 and April 6, 2015 had the problem, Autoblog reported. Only those with the six-speed manual transmission are affected, however.

Hyundai spotted a manufacturing problem that affects two important components namely, the suspension rear crossmember and the driveshaft.

"If the rear differential loosens from its mounting position, the driveshaft may disconnect from the differential, resulting in a loss of propulsion and an increased risk of a crash," per the notice found in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

According to the South Korean automaker's estimates, around 10,800 Genesis Coupes from model years 2013 to 2015 are affected by the recall.

Owners of affected units will receive recall notices by Jan. 11, 2016. By then, owners may take their vehicles to Hyundai dealers where it will be inspected to verify if the differential was properly assembled, free of charge.

Repairs will be made if necessary, according to The Car Connection.

The Genesis Coupe, a rear-wheel drive sports coupe, debuted in its home market in 2008. In 2010, it eventually rolled out in the US market, according to Autoblog. It was later revised in 2013, which is when the recall begins.

Per the website, an all-new model should be unveiled soon under the automaker's new Genesis luxury sub-brand.

Back in Oct, Franchise Herald reported Hyundai recalled the popular Sonata and Accent models due to debris in the engine crankshaft and a faulty brake light switch, respectively.

Genesis Coupe owners who believe they're part of the recall are advised to contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Be sure to ask about recall #135. Alternatively, you may contact the NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
