'Outlander' Season 2 Casting News: Actor For Well-Loved Major Book Character Identified

| By

"Outlander" season 2 cast continues to get bigger.

Starz announced that a major character from the book where the show is based from is coming and he will be played by Richard Rankin.

"'Outlander' has cast Scottish actor Richard Rankin in the pivotal role of Roger Wakefield, Starz announced Monday," according to Variety.

"Described as intelligent, kindhearted, and charming, Roger is the grown up version of Reverend Wakefield's adopted son, who we met in season one. After his parents died in World War II, Roger was raised by the Reverend (with help from his housekeeper, Mrs. Graham) and is a proud Scot through and through. Now a professor at Oxford, Roger has a keen interest in history, and all the secrets and insight it presents."

Rankin's acting resume includes "Burnt" which starred Bradley Cooper and NBC's "American Odyssey." The most recent project he did before joining "Outlander" season 2 cast is BBC One drama "From Darkness."

Aside from the information above, what makes Roger an interesting character is his relationship to Brianna (yet to be cast). He is married to the daughter of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan).

"Outlander" season 2 cast is expected to grow even larger as its release date nears. Among those fans expect big time is the actress who will assume the role of Brianna who is revealed as part of second season a couple of months back.

Executive producer Ronald Moore says they are close to finding the actress for the role.

"Hopefully we'll be announcing soon. We're getting close. But it's a tough part to cast and it's just taking a while," he told E! Online.

Fans are very specific regarding Brianna but Moore said they are open to anyone, including casting a well-known actress.

"We haven't been really looking for a name per se. I think we're open to it but it hasn't really been our focus," he adds.

Moore said "Outlander" season 2 release date is either March or April this year.
