A production-ready version of the 2017 Chevy Bolt has been leaked by spy shots last week ahead of its official unveiling at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in January.
"It looks like a Volt had an evening of regrets with an i3," AutoblogGreen's editor-in-chief Sebastian Blanco said of GM's upcoming pure electric vehicle.
The world first saw the Chevrolet Bolt at the 2015 North American International Auto Show and has since been under development, according to Green Car Reports.
GCR noted that the most significant changes to the production-ready Bolt are the gloss-black trim similar to the last-generation Volt and the rear pillar which "adopts a floating-canopy look."
The spy shots didn't include the interior but it's expected that it will feature a toned-down design compared to the concept car's interior, according to the website.
Although it has the same underpinnings as the Sonic, Car and Driver expects GM to pitch the Bolt as a crossover "which could explain why the prototype here has subtle roof rails and black fender trim."
Per the website, the EV's crossover proportions "could help mask any extra height that might have been required to package the batteries."
As for the Bolt's powertrain, CaD said GM will source its lithium-ion battery packs from LG Chem. At least 50kWh of capacity is expected which should be good for the EV's targeted range of 200 miles.
Per Autoblog, GM's first pure EV since the EV1 will be built in Mich. And may arrive at dealerships in early 2017.
When it does, the 2017 Chevy Bolt will compete against the BMW i3, Kia Soul EV, Nissan Leaf and the Tesla Model 3, among others.
The spy shots pre-empted GM's expected unveiling of the Bolt at CES 2016 in Las Vegas next month.
