Those looking to use cheese products could experience a shortage due to high demand Advertising Age reported Monday.
Grocery stores on the east coast, such as one in Brooklyn had said they were in short supply, and would not receive any more until February according to Advertising Age.
"Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks," Jody Moore, spokeswoman at Kraft told Advertising Age in an e-mail. "Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue."
"It is possible consumers may not be able to find some Velveeta products on store shelves over the next couple of week," Moore told Advertising Age. "We have not heard many complaints from consumers so far."
"I can tell you there is a combination of factors involved, but the driver is really the high demand. We really haven't heard much from consumers about it at all. It's a short-term issue amplified by the fact that this is a key time for the brand."
Kraft has made Velveeta Mac and Cheese for the past 86 years USA Today reported. It is used in grilled cheese sandwiches, and casseroles. The product has brought in over $500 million for Kraft USA Today reported.
"It's not a seasonal product," Ken Albala, a culinary historian told USA today. Albala teaches "History of Food" at University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. "There is no dish served between Thanksgiving and Christmas that is quintessentially Velveeta," Albala told USA Today. "The whole point of Velveeta is you keep it on the shelf indefinitely. It's the cheese for people who don't know how to cook. I prefer real cheese. I've never bought it in my life."
