[WATCH] HTC Vive Release Date ‘Really Close,’ Price Just Right; Updates ‘In The Coming Weeks’

| By

2015 is coming to a close in a matter of weeks but that's still enough time for HTC Vive release date, price and other updates, according to a company rep.

Speaking to RTÉ News, HTC's Graham Breen reaffirmed more updates on the virtual reality headset will be revealed in the next few weeks.

"We're really close actually," Breen replied when asked about the device's release date, as quoted by VR Focus.

"So this is a dev kit we're working on, but we're going to be launching it early next year so we're going to be making some proper announcement in the coming weeks," he continued.

"But we're really close, actually, so it's a pretty exciting time."

Franchise Herald previously reported the HTC Vive will follow a staggered release date. Only a "limited quantity" will roll out this year followed by a wider release next year.

Back in Oct, rumors suggested that the Vive VR headset could launch on Dec. 8.

In the same interview, Breen also offered hints on the Vive's price. Suffice to say, it looks like HTC and Valve's VR headset will be priced just right.

"It's not going to be super cheap because you've got an amazing piece of technology here," he said adding, "but it's also not going to be bank-breaking."

By contrast, Sony's PlayStation VR is expected to retail at around $400.

The Vive however is a PC-based virtual reality headset, much like Facebook-owned Oculus Rift. Like release date and pricing though, the Taiwanese tech firm has yet to reveal the exact specs needed to power the SteamVR headset.

An HTC rep did say that PC specs are meant to provide a "very premium experience."

As it stands, much about the HTC Vive, including its exact release date, price and other information have yet to be revealed.
