"Gravity Falls" showrunner Alex Hirsch broke out to fans on Thursday the sad announcement that the highest rated Disney XD show is coming to an end.
Alex Hirsch took to Twitter to announce the "Gravity Falls" finale. He wrote: "Hey guys. 'Gravity Falls has been an amazing journey, but the rumors are true-it's reaching its finale."
Since it started in June 2012, "Gravity Falls" has created a huge fanbase, who followed the weird, mysterious and fun adventures of twins Dipper Pines and Mabel. Together, Dipper and Mabel had unlocked the secrets of the mysterious town of Gravity Falls and meeting several paranormal and supernatural characters.
According to Alex Hirsch, "Gravity Falls" is inspired by his own childhood adventures with his twin sister, Ariel Hirsch. Another character, Grunkle Stan, was inspired by his Grandpa Stan. Alex Hirsch also gave Mabel a pet pig because his twin sister also wanted one when they were still kids. Alex Hirsch, himself, appeared on "Gravity Falls" multiple times already.
In an interview with Collider three years ago, Hirsch revealed that "Gravity Falls" started as his student film at the California Institute of Arts, until Disney approached him and said they were interested with the material.
"Disney approached me. I was working at Cartoon Network, at the time, on a show called 'Flapjack,' and a Disney executive, Mike Moon, just cold-called me," Hirsch told Collider. "He'd seen one of my student films and really liked it, and said, 'Would you like to develop a show for Disney Channel?' I hadn't thought about developing a show for the Disney Channel, but I thought, 'Maybe this is the place that would be interested in my weird 'Twin Peaks' meets 'The Simpsons' series. From the moment that I pitched it to them until now, I've just been really surprised and really grateful for the fact that they've embraced it."
So when finally "Gravity Falls" is coming to an end, it saddened, not just Alex Hirsch, but the entire fandom. Although it's interesting to note that the fans had not just been entirely sad but are overwhelmingly supportive of Hirsch's decision to conclude the show.
"Congratulations on a spectacular run. It was an honor to visit GF, and I can't wait to see whatever amazing thing you do next," American artist Al Yankovic tweeted Alex Hirsch.
"This is very sad news, but I'll definitely keep watching whatever you make next! I'm excited for your future shows/creations!" a Twitter user replied to Hirsch's announcement.
"While it is sad news, in a way, I think GF has gone the best possible route and I'm glad it will have the ending it deserves," another fan said.
Alex Hirsch then posted hours after announcing the "Gravity Falls" finale: "Growing up doesn't mean you have to grow up. Thanks to every 'Gravity Falls' fan for taking a trip back to childhood with me #GravityFinale "
