Freddie Roach Says Scorecards In Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez Fight Does Not Justify Match's Story

| By

The winner of the Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez fight was determined through scorecards. Mexican Alvarez won over his older opponent through a 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111 decision from three judges.

It was a close-contested boxing-match and although it was a unanimous decision among all the officials, Cotto's trainer Freddie Roach thinks the score does not justify how the match's result could have gone other way.

"We thought it was much closer than the scorecards showed," said Roach during the post-match conference. "It was a very competitive fight. Miguel's defense was unbelievable."

Roach preaches about how good Cotto's defense was versus Alvarez. However, his guy was not able to throw enough accurate punches to hurt his opponent and garner higher score.

According to the scoresheet for Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez fight as published by The Guardian, the younger Alvarez connected more punches, 155-129. When it comes to power punches, the Mexican was the one who made more, 298-255.

"I have a lot of respect for Miguel," said Alvarez who now sports a record of 46-1-1 and 32 K.O.

"We knew going into this fight that it would be a difficult journey, but I feel that I was the faster and stronger fighter tonight. I wasn't hurt by his punches. I was fully prepared for what Cotto was going to do in the ring, whether that was take a defense stance or be the aggressor."

Alvarez thinks he is a more complete boxer more than ever after victory over the 38-year old Miguel Cotto.

"I wanted to leave no doubt - a clear victory," Alvarez said afterward. "I feel like a more complete fighter, a more solid fighter and those other fighters prepared me for this moment. I'm ready."

His promoter Oscar de la Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions thinks Alvarez is the man boxing has been looking for as its new face with Floyd Mayweather Jr. now retired and Manny Pacquiao gearing up for his last fight next year.

"The bottom line is we have 'the guy.' We have 'the guy' for many years, and it's going to be a lot of fun putting together some big fights," De La Hoya told reporters.
